Speaking to Fox News after that meeting, Zelensky said: “I don’t know what will happen after the elections and who will be president. But I have very direct information from Donald Trump that he will be on our side, that he will support Ukraine.”
Zelensky used his visit to the United States to promote his “victory plan,” which one US official described as a repackaged call for more weapons and a lifting of restrictions on the use of long-range missiles. The plan presupposes Russia’s definitive defeat in the war, the official said. Some officials consider this goal unrealistic.
The Ukrainian president, who also met with Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden, said he seeks the united support of the United States in his continuing war with Russia and that he does not support any side in the US elections. .
“I don’t want to get involved in the election period (…) I don’t want to lose one part or another of the Americans,” Zelensky told Fox News.
On Friday, Trump said he was delighted to meet with Zelensky, a marked change in tone from some of his previous comments during the election campaign.
