Former US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the start of his campaign for the 2024 US presidential election.
“America’s comeback begins right now,” Trump, 76, told hundreds of supporters at his private home in Florida’s Mar-a-Lago.
“I am announcing tonight that I am running for president of the United States,” said Trump, who shortly before filed the official documents to register his candidacy for the United States Election Commission.
Trump’s unusually early entry into the race for the White House is seen as an attempt to get ahead of other Republicans who will seek the Republican Party’s nomination for president of the United States and to dismiss possible criminal charges.
Republicans have suffered an unexpectedly poor performance in the US midterm elections, largely attributed to the poor performance of Trump-backed candidates, and some Republicans are openly questioning whether Trump is the right man for the Republican nomination for the White House .
Other Republicans may also run for this nomination, the main one being Florida state governor Ron DeSantis, who was convincingly re-elected to governor on Nov. 8.
