An official from the US Department of Homeland Security has revealed some other peculiar information about President Donald Trump’s statement about the desire to buy Greenland from Denmark, which caused a wide resonance. Mailz Taylor, the department’s chief of staff, says the president wanted to trade Greenland for Puerto Rico.
Speaking on the TV channel “MSNBC”, Taylor said that such a thought for Tramp arose in 2018. At the time, the US government had to plan to provide relief to two hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.
At the time, the president wanted to see if Puerto Rico could be exchanged or sold because he thought it was “poor and dirty.”
Puerto Rico is currently an associate state of the United States, with US citizens albeit without the right to vote.
Last year, Trump canceled a scheduled visit to Denmark after Danish Prime Minister Mete Fredriksen called Trump’s proposal to buy Greenland absurd.
Greenland attracted the attention of the US President, given its growing strategic importance in relation to the melting of glaciers, which could open up new sea routes in the North Atlantic.
China, the largest geopolitical competitor in the United States, was also interested in Greenland, expressing its desire to develop a trade line through it, which was called the “Polar Silk Road”.
