Both politicians are unpopular: the election will be less a popularity contest and more a referendum on which Americans consider the least bad option.
On November 5, Americans will choose their next president. Incumbent President Joe Biden faces no real competition for the Democratic nomination. His predecessor in office, Donald Trump, easily beat his competitors in the Republican primaries.
This will be the first return election in almost 70 years. After Trump lost the previous election, his supporters tried to overturn the results. He faces federal charges in connection with his alleged participation in the scheme, as well as three other criminal cases.
Biden’s presidency has been characterized by high inflation, major industrial policy bills and turmoil abroad in Afghanistan, Ukraine and the Middle East. Both politicians are unpopular. The election will be less a popularity contest and more a referendum on which Americans consider the least bad option.

Key dates
The election is still many months away, but now that two candidates have been identified, the campaign can begin in earnest.
July 15
Republican National Convention
It is usually a four-day contest for the party’s chosen candidate. The party will officially select its presidential and vice presidential candidates in Milwaukee.
August 19
Democratic National Convention
As at the Republican National Convention a month earlier, Democrats will formally nominate Biden as their presidential candidate in Chicago.
16 of September
First presidential debate
The two main candidates are expected to meet three times, debating important issues (or at least trading insults) for 90 minutes each time. Their vice presidential candidates will also debate once.
November 5
Election Day
Polls will open Tuesday in early November, although early voting and mail-in ballot initiatives will mean many Americans have already voted. In some states, ballot counting will continue for weeks.
January 6, 2025
Certification of results
After all votes have been counted, the results must be certified by Congress. Typically a formal event, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in 2021 to stop the certification. He is on trial for his alleged role in the attack.
January 20, 2025
Inauguration
The new (or re-elected) president will be sworn in for his second term on the steps of the Capitol building in Washington, DC.
Joe Biden
Joe Biden, at 81, will become the oldest major party presidential candidate, breaking his own record set in 2020. Biden won a Senate seat at age 30 and held it for more than three decades. He made unsuccessful bids for the presidency in 1988 and 2008 and served as vice president under Barack Obama. He led an international coalition to support Ukraine in the fight against the Russian invasion.
Donald Trump
Donald Trump’s extraordinary campaign follows his remarkable tenure as America’s 45th president, which ended shortly after his supporters carried out a violent attack on the Capitol. His alleged role in inciting the attack and broader efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election led to two criminal charges in federal and state court in Georgia. He faces two more charges for a total of 91 felony charges. Trump, 77, denies all wrongdoing. Trump is a self-proclaimed billionaire who made (and lost) most of his money in real estate before becoming a reality TV star. This time, his campaign combines familiar culture war issues (border wall construction, “leftist gender madness”) with fresh grievances (against the lawyers handling his cases and the judges overseeing them).
Earlier, Biden not only significantly narrowed the gap with Trump in the polls, but also took the lead.
