Donald Trump has said that if he returns to the White House, China would not dare to challenge him because President Xi Jinping knows the Republican is “crazy”.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal editorial board, Trump said that if elected president next month, he would impose tariffs on China if it seeks to exclude Taiwan.
“I would say: if you go to Taiwan, I’m sorry to do this, I’ll tax you 150% to 200%,” he said.
In his campaign ahead of the presidential election, the Republican candidate argued that America’s adversaries would not act against US interests under the new Trump presidency because they would fear a forceful, even unpredictable, response.
He claimed that he would not need to use military force to prevent a blockade of Taiwan because President Xi “respects me and knows that I am [υπερβολικά] crazy”.
“I had a very strong relationship with him,” Trump said of President Xi. “He was really, really good, I don’t want to say friend – I don’t want to sound stupid, ‘he was my friend’ – but I got on well with him.”
“He’s a very wild person,” Trump added.
The former US president also praised his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying: “I got on well with him.”
But Trump – who has been criticized in the past for praising the Russian leader – said he had threatened him not to invade Ukraine.
Continuing his conversation with the WSJ editor, he added that he told Putin: “I’m going to hit you right in the middle of Moscow.” I said, “We’re friends. I don’t want to do it, but I have no choice.” And he continued: “No way”
Vowing to wage trade wars and end US involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump has branded his foreign policy America First, though critics counter that it is isolationist.
The selection of Republican JD Vance as his running mate worried Ukraine’s allies, as the Ohio senator strongly opposes sending further US aid to the country.
