Washington. Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s future “border czar,” said Monday that he will prioritize deporting immigrants who are in the country illegally and pose a security threat.
Trump, who will take office in January, said in a social media post overnight that the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in his first administration will be in charge. the country’s borders in its new government as of January 20.
The president-elect made the fight against illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, promising mass deportations.
He is expected to mobilize agencies across the government to help him deport a record number of immigrants in an operation that his incoming vice president says could expel a million people a year.
“Threats to public safety and national security will be the priority … they represent the greatest danger to this country,” Homan told Fox News in an interview. Homan added that he would like to have the cooperation of local security forces: “We are going to do the job with or without you,” he said.
In a post on his Truth Social platform late Sunday, Trump said Homan will be “in charge of our nation’s borders, including, but not limited to, the southern border, the northern border, all maritime and aviation”, including the deportation of immigrants in an illegal situation.
Immigrant advocates have warned that Trump’s deportation effort would be costly, divisive and inhumane, leading to family separations and devastating communities.
