Trump threatens to suspend relations with Mexico if he returns to the White House

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump threatened to cut ties with Mexico if he returns to the White House after the November elections, during a campaign rally in a controversial Michigan city that has been a key location for the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in the past and where a month ago a group of white supremacists chanted: “We love Hitler, we love Trump.”

“Mexico is really taking advantage of our country, they want billions of dollars just to talk… I think they wanted billions of dollars to negotiate… They wanted two billion dollars before they started negotiating, that’s not going to happen with me. I would say, ‘Really, negotiate?’ The trade relationship with Mexico is over. And they would say, ‘Sir, we’re going to give you two billion,’” he said at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Howell, a city of about 10,000 residents northwest of Detroit.

“They could have told Mexico: if you don’t do it, we won’t trade with you, we won’t do business with you, we won’t let you sell your cars in the United States… to these ridiculous people. They took 32 percent of our auto industry from us for many years, they are building some of the largest auto plants in the world (…) they think they are going to manufacture these cars and then ship them to the United States without paying taxes. That is not going to happen. We will put a tariff of 100% to 200%. We are not going to allow that to happen,” promised the Republican.

He also promised to close the border with Mexico on his first day as president and reproached his Democratic rival and current vice president Kamala Harris for not being more forceful with the neighbor. “I will send Kamala (Harris) illegal immigrants back to their countries.”

The rally took place in Howell, where a white supremacist rally took place last month. They chanted “Heil Hitler” through the streets, marched with signs reading “White Lives Matter.” According to local media, chants such as “We love Hitler, we love Trump” were also heard.
