Trump tells Putin not to escalate war

Putin and Trump

NOS newstoday, 02:32

Recently elected US President Donald Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin not to escalate the war in Ukraine in a phone conversation, reports The Washington Post. This was the first conversation between the two since Trump won the election last week.

Trump reportedly reminded Putin on Thursday from his Florida residence about “Washington’s significant military presence in Europe,” the American newspaper wrote, citing an anonymous source said to be aware of the call. In the conversation, Trump also said he wanted a follow-up meeting to discuss “a quick solution to the war in Ukraine,” according to the Washington Post.

The president-elect said during his campaign that he would end the war in 24 hours. It is not known exactly how he intends to achieve this. Saturday Trump’s adviser said the new administration will focus on achieving peace in Ukraine, instead of recapturing Russian-occupied territories. Trump’s team then announced that the adviser does not work for the president and does not speak on Trump’s behalf.

According to the Washington Post, Ukraine was informed of the call to Putin and no objection was raised to the call. Finish September Zelensky and Trump met in New York and discussed the war. After the 40-minute meeting, Trump said he and Zelensky both want “this to end, and we both want a fair deal.”

Without government support

Trump spoke last night with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. During the conversation, according to a spokesman for the German government, “geopolitical challenges” were discussed. Both also said they wanted to work “to return peace to Europe”.

In addition, according to The Washington Post, Trump’s first talks with the leaders were not held with the support of the State Department and interpreters from the US government.
