Hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump arrived in the nation’s capital on Tuesday to applaud the president’s unfounded claims about electoral fraud, a day before the vote in Congress to confirm the triumph of Joe Biden in The elections.
A few blocks from the White House, protesters – many of them without masks – gathered in Liberty Square to reject the Electoral College vote. As night fell, with the temperature dropping and under constant rain, hundreds of people continued in the square.
“I just came to support the president,” said David Wideman, a 45-year-old firefighter who traveled from Memphis, Tennessee.
Widem acknowledged that he was “confused” by the series of defeats that the president’s legal team suffered in his attempt to reverse the election results and did not know what Trump’s remaining options were.
“I’m not sure what you can do at this point, but I want to hear what you have to say,” Wideman said.
Trump tweeted his support for the protesters: “Washington is being inundated by people who don’t want to see radical left-wing Democrats steal an election victory. Our country has had enough, they won’t take it anymore. We hear you (and love you) from the Oval Office. Make America Great One More Time! “
The president is expected to personally address supporters in Washington Wednesday during an event at The Ellipse Park, a short distance from the White House. The protests coincide with the vote in Congress on Wednesday in which the results of the Electoral College are expected to be certified, which Trump continues to reject.
The protests have forced local authorities and law enforcement agencies to prepare for possible violent clashes in the streets. Many of the businesses in the center of the capital walled up their windows out of fear that the demonstrations would turn into riots similar to those that occurred in May and June, when dozens of establishments were vandalized.
