Biden “No controversy over his allegations”
The US Senate’s impeachment trial against former US President Donald Trump was rejected. Trump’s seven Republican lawmakers voted in favor of the impeachment, but it did not reach the quorum. When the impeachment trial against him was rejected, former President Trump said, “It was the greatest witch hunt in history. “Our patriotic movement to make America great has just begun.” But his successor, President Joe Biden, said, “The Senate vote did not determine (Trump’s) guilty, but his charges are indisputable.”
On the 13th, the US Senate voted for the impeachment of former President Trump, with 57 votes guilty and 43 not guilty. In order to be convicted, at least 67, or two-thirds of all 100 senators, must vote. Considering that the ruling Democratic Party and the Republican Party had 50 seats each, the Republican Party should have had 17 churn votes, but the rebellion was only 7 votes. In a speech in front of the White House in Washington on the 6th of last month, when Trump was in office as president, charges of inciting supporters to invade the Capitol were applied (incitement to civil war), and an impeachment prosecution was initiated in the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives passed a bill of impeachment on the 13th of last month.
Trump’s impeachment bill was passed twice in the House of Representatives, but in the Senate impeachment trial, he was both acquitted. Earlier, he passed a bill of impeachment in the House of Representatives in December 2019 due to the so-called “Ukrainian scandal” that pressured Ukraine to investigate the corruption of the rich son Joe Biden in order to win the 2020 presidential election, which was rejected in the Senate in February the following year.
Former President Trump made a statement right after the rejection of the impeachment trial and said, “I have a lot to share with you in the coming months. We look forward to continuing our amazing journey.” Even after retirement, there is a prospect that he, who is receiving a lot of support from conservative voters, will start a new party and re-challenge the presidential election. The Hill, a political media outlet, recently surveyed Republican voters, and 64% of respondents said, “If Trump makes a new party, I will support it.” However, the ongoing prosecution investigation and various lawsuits are likely to weigh on former President Trump’s actions. In addition, although impeachment was avoided, the possibility of criminal penalties for accusing supporters of invading the parliament cannot be ruled out. Republican Senate Representative Mitch McConnell, who voted against the impeachment trial, said, “There is no doubt that (former President Trump) is responsible for triggering the incident of the day.” Prosecutors in Georgia, the biggest battleground during the last year’s presidential election, are investigating charges of former President Trump calling State Secretary of State Brad Rappensperger to pressure him to overturn the results of the election. Georgia is a traditional Republican garden, but in November last year, in the presidential election, Trump lost by 1779 votes. The New York State prosecution, home of former President Trump, is also investigating charges of fraud and tax evasion at the Trump family company.
