US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone call on Thursday to discuss Moscow’s war in Ukraine, the US military said. The Washington Post.

The publication cited “several people familiar with the matter” who said the two had their first phone conversation on November 7 after Trump won the US presidential election.

Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida. During the conversation, he advised Vladimir Putin not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminded him of Washington’s significant military presence in Europe.

The Washington Post emphasizes that sources familiar with the conversation provided the information on condition of complete anonymity because of the particular sensitivity of the subject. There is no official confirmation of the conversation from either Moscow or Washington.

Trump, who will take office on January 20, has promised to end the war quickly. So far, however, he has not explained how he intends to do this. After his election victory, he also had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the two spoke for half an hour, but without concrete proposals or ideas.

Republican strategist Brian Lanza, who is one of Trump’s advisers, said that Kiev should forget about returning Crimea.

The billionaire is still waiting for a realistic proposal for a peace agreement with Russia from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It does not include the return of the Crimean peninsula, the adviser said.

The Kremlin commented today that the newly elected US President Donald Trump has shown “positive signals” regarding his position on the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, France Press reported. “The signals are positive. During his election campaign, Trump said that he perceives everything through deals, that he can conclude deals that will lead to peace,” said the spokesman of the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, quoted by BTA.

“At least he talks about peace. He doesn’t talk about confrontation, he doesn’t talk about wanting to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, and that sets him apart, in his favor, from the current administration,” Peskov said.

The Kremlin spokesman noted that speculation about whether Trump will be able to build relations with Russia in his second presidential term is better left to American political analysts. “We can only watch what happens. We can only follow the plan, achieve the goals we have set for ourselves,” he added.
