Trump says that Mexico agreed to stop the arrival of migrants – Diario La Página –

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Wednesday that Mexico agreed to stop the arrival of migrants to US territory “with immediate effect”, something of which his team has not offered details and of which the Government has not reported either. Mexican.

«Mexico will detain people heading to our southern border, effective immediately. This will go a long way in stopping the illegal invasion of the United States. “Thank you!” Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social.

Trump’s statement came after having a telephone conversation with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

“I just had a wonderful conversation with the new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump said, adding that the president “has agreed to stop migration through Mexico and into the United States, effectively closing our southern border.”

«Also, we have talked about what can be done to stop the massive flow of drugs into the United States and the domestic consumption of these substances. “It was a very productive conversation,” Trump added.

However, Trump’s transition team did not provide additional information about a specific agreement with Mexico. Additionally, any potential compromise faces limitations, as the current president is still Joe Biden, and Trump will not take office until January 20, 2025.

Sheinbaum contradicts what Trump said
For his part, Sheinbaum offered his own version of the conversation on social networks and, at no point did he mention that he had agreed to take measures to stop the arrival of migrants to the southern border of the United States.

On the other hand, the president said she had had an “excellent conversation” with Trump in which they both addressed “the Mexican strategy on the phenomenon of migration” and in which she also shared the fact that “caravans are not arriving in the northern border because they are attended to in Mexico.

“Also, we talked about strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl,” added the Mexican president.

Trump’s statements about an alleged agreement with Mexico could be a negotiation strategy, an approach he already used during his first term (2017-2021).

The call took place shortly after Trump announced, on Monday, November 25, his intention to impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada, in addition to an additional 10% on Chinese products.

This announcement has provoked strong reactions in the three affected countries, which are the main trading partners of the United States.
