Donald Trump gave his first interview since being sworn in as US president on Wednesday, choosing host Sean Hannity and the conservative-leaning Fox News network.
Trump did not miss the opportunity to repeat his commitment to deport millions of immigrants from the US, assuring that “thousands of terrorists” are in the country because of the immigration policy pursued by his predecessor Joe Biden.
Trump emphasized that countries like Venezuela “took the gangs off their streets and brought them to the US.” “We will deal with it”, assured the new president of the USA, estimating that “we took over on time”.
A short time before this interview, the spokeswoman for the US presidency, Caroline Leavitt, announced that the Republican had signed “an executive order to send 1,500 additional troops to the border” of the US with Mexico.
They will be added to the more than 2,000 soldiers already on the country’s southern border.
For Biden
In his interview yesterday, Trump also referred to his predecessor’s decision to preemptively pardon some members of his family, as well as public officials, such as Anthony Fauci.
The Republican commented that it is “sad” that Biden did not pardon himself. “And you know, the funny thing, maybe the sad thing, is that he didn’t pardon himself,” he told Hannity.
When asked by the Fox News reporter if he would like Congress to investigate his predecessor, Trump replied: “I think I’ll let Congress decide.”
Attack on FEMA
As the fires rage in Los Angeles, Trump hinted in an interview that he is considering eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“FEMA has not done its job for the last four years,” he said.
“FEMA is going to be a big conversation very soon because I’d rather see the states take on their problems,” he added.
“I love Oklahoma, but you know what, if they get hit by a tornado or something, let’s let Oklahoma handle it. And then the federal government can help them with the money,” Trump said.
During his first term as US president (2017-2021), Trump declared that “FEMA is working really well”.
In addition, the Republican criticized the way the fires in Los Angeles are being managed by the Democratic governor of California, Gavin Newsom.
Speaking to Hannity, Trump again accused Newsom of withholding water in northern California to protect a protected fish species. “I’m going to make an announcement today, I don’t believe we should give anything to California until they let the water flow” to the southern part of the state, he explained.
What he said about TikTok
Trump also dismissed concerns that TikTok is collecting Americans’ personal data on China’s behalf, saying: “Is it so important for China to spy on young people? The little kids watching crazy videos?’
After Hannity pressed him, even saying that the platform owned by Chinese company ByteDance is “a spy app for the Communist Chinese,” the Republican quipped: “But you can say that about all the products that are made in China — look at the phones we’re mostly made in China, we have so many things that are made in China, so why aren’t we referring to that?’
