Julian Assange’s lawyer said on Wednesday that former Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, Donald Trump’s ally, offered the founder of WikiLeaks a pardon on behalf of the President. In return, Assange would have to testify that Russia was not involved in the theft of emails to the National Committee of the Democratic Party in 2016.
During a hearing at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the defender of Julian AssangeJennifer Robinson claimed that Trump used Dana Rohrabacher in 2017 to convey his proposal to Assange. According to Robinson, the congressman will have met Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where the Australian spent seven years.
Cited by the BBC, the White House guarantees that these revelations are “inventions and lies”. Edward Fitzgerald QC, a lawyer who also represents Assange, ensures that the defense team has evidence that this meeting has taken place and that this proposal has been presented to his client. The judge considered the evidence presented to be valid.
The official responsible for the release of diplomatic documents from the US State Department, is in a British prison, after being detained by the authorities at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Assange is awaiting a decision on the United States extradition request, with the US government wanting the whistleblower to be tried for allegedly violating the Espionage Law by revealing documents relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan war. Charged with 18 crimes, Assange faces up to 175 years in prison.
