The newly elected American president has had his first telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin. In the conversation, that according to the Washington Post Already on Thursday, Donald Trump called on the Russian President not to escalate the war in Ukraine.
Trump is also said to have reminded Putin that Washington still has a large number of soldiers stationed in Europe. The American is also said to have expressed interest in further talks with the Russian aimed at finding a solution to the Ukraine war.
A spokesman for Trump declined to comment on the call. However, the future president’s leaked statements indicate that America is facing a change in foreign policy.
This fits: At the weekend, Trump announced that he would neither appoint Nikki Haley, 52, nor Mike Pompeo, 60, to his future cabinet. The two Republicans are seen as figureheads of the party wing that advocates the continuation of a traditional security policy. Similar to President Joe Biden, they called on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
Haley’s rejection doesn’t really come as a surprise. She challenged Trump in the Republican primary and heavily criticized the new (and old) president in the primaries. Even after her clear defeat, she kept Trump at a distance. Shortly before Election Day, Haley published an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal entitled “Trump isn’t perfect, but he’s the better choice.”
The rejection of Pompeo, on the other hand, came out of nowhere. He had actively campaigned for Trump and was therefore considered a possible candidate for the post of Defense Secretary after the Republican’s victory. What spoke for Pompeo was that he had loyally served the then president in his first term in office – despite different views – as CIA director and secretary of state. In this capacity, Pompeo also traveled to Switzerland in 2019 to pay an official visit to the country.
Apparently, influential voices in Trump’s environment resisted Pompeo’s appointment to an important cabinet post. The publication “Politico” reported that he had been blocked by, among others, Donald Trump Junior and the commentator Tucker Carlson. The two have made no secret in the past that they do not agree with Pompeo’s foreign policy ideas.
Triple victory for Trump’s Republicans
Trump scored a clear victory in the presidential election on Tuesday. He won all seven contested political states and received 312 of 538 votes in the Electoral College. Nationwide, Trump received 50.6 percent of the vote.
In the Senate, Republicans will hold 53 of the 100 seats, an increase of 4 seats compared to the last legislature. There is a slim Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Here too, the counting of votes is still ongoing.
Meanwhile, Trump is expected in Washington on Wednesday. He has accepted Joe Biden’s invitation and will be received by the outgoing president in the Oval Office. Trump renounced this tradition in 2020 after his defeat in the presidential election.
