Donald Trump said that if elected, his administration would not only protect access to in vitro fertilization, but would also have the government or insurance companies cover the cost of the expensive service for American women who need it.
According to NBC News, “The government will pay or insurance companies will be required to pay all costs associated with insemination treatments.”
The 78-year-old New York tycoon said he is in favor of this measure because they want there to be “more babies.”
“For the same reason, we will also allow new parents to deduct the large expenses of the newborn from their taxes. (…) We are pro-family. No one has said this before, but artificial insemination treatments are expensive. For many people it is very difficult to do it and to obtain it, but I have been in favour of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) from the beginning,” he added.
When asked to clarify whether the government would pay for IVF services or whether insurance companies would do soTrump reiterated that one option would be for insurance companies to pay “under a mandate.”
Abortion and IVF have been political negatives for the Republican Party this year. Democrats have criticized Republicans over IVF in recent months, saying that GOP-pushed abortion restrictions could lead to restrictions on assisted pregnancies as well.
The website healthinsurance.org, which offers a guide to insurers, notes that federal law does not require any insurance plan to cover infertility treatments because assisted reproduction is not considered an essential health benefit.
Nevertheless, By the end of 2023, according to its data, 21 of the country’s 50 states and the District of Columbia, where the capital, Washington DC, is located, had passed laws requiring at least some state-regulated insurance plans to partially cover infertility services.
