Washington: After a summit in Hanoi two years ago to ease tensions between the two countries, Donald Trump invited North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to board the U.S. president’s official plane, Air Force One, according to a BBC documentary. The former US president expressed his love at the summit after Kim and Trump threatened each other and worried the world.
The documentary says that Trump, who offered Kim a ‘lift’ on Air Force One after the summit in Vietnam in 2019, surprised even the most experienced diplomats. If Trump’s promise had been accepted, Kim and some of his attendants would have boarded the U.S. president’s official plane and the plane would have entered North Korean airspace. This could lead to many security issues.
“President Trump offered Kim a lift in Air Force One,” Pottinger, who is well acquainted with Trump’s National Security Council, told the BBC. Trump knew that Kim had arrived in Hanoi after traveling through China by train for several days. “I can get you home in two hours if you want,” Trump told Kim.
Kim turned down the offer anyway. No significant progress was made at the meeting in Hanoi. The reason was that North Korea was not ready to fully accept the conditions for lifting the sanctions. Kim said last month that the United States was his greatest enemy and that whoever came to power in Washington would not change its policy against North Korea.
