The future US President Trump has nominated a special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Former General Kellogg is said to have previously presented Trump with a plan to end the war between the two countries.
US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former General Keith Kellogg as his special envoy to Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg served as White House National Security Council chief of staff and security adviser to then-Vice President Mike Pence during Trump’s term from 2017 to early 2021.
Kellogg had an outstanding career in the military and in business “and served in highly sensitive roles in the area of national security during my first term in office,” Trump said on his online platform Truth Social.
Kellogg is said to have drawn up a plan for the end of the war
The 80-year-old Kellogg presented Trump with a plan to end the war, three insiders familiar with the matter told Reuters. The plan therefore envisages freezing the front lines in their current positions and forcing the governments in Kiev and Moscow to the negotiating table.
Kellogg is said to have drafted his plan for Ukraine with Fred Fleitz, who also served as chief of staff of the National Security Council under Trump. According to their proposals, the US would only provide Ukraine with more weapons if it enters into peace talks. At the same time, the US would warn Russia that any refusal to negotiate would lead to increased support for Ukraine. NATO membership for Ukraine would be off the table for the time being.
Trump is opposed to the US’s billions in aid to Ukraine and declared during the election campaign that if he won the election, he would end the war in Ukraine before he took office.
The Republican’s swearing in for his second term will take place on January 20th. Critics fear that a “deal” with Russia sought by Trump would force Ukraine to forgo territory occupied by Russia in the face of a lack of financial and military aid.
