Trump insists civilians should be armed against evil

Former President Donald Trump has once again defended the right of citizens to arm themselves at the meeting of the American gun lobby club NRA. According to him, evil can only be combated by arming ordinary citizens.

The National Rifle Association meeting in Houston is traditionally used to emphasize the right of Americans to bear arms. The conference lasts three days and was canceled for the past two years because of corona.

This year’s edition cannot be separated from this week’s tragedy at a school in Uvalde, Texas, where an 18-year-old boy committed a massacre. He shot and killed 19 children and two adults.

For Trump and other speakers, the event was not a reason to question gun ownership, on the contrary. According to Trump, the perpetrator in Uvalde was disturbed and society should arm itself against this.

He called for more measures to secure schools, such as no more than an entrance, more metal detectors and armed security guards at the gates. Teachers should also be allowed to carry weapons.

President Biden thought otherwise this week, demanding stricter laws after the Texas massacre. Previous presidents have also advocated this, but many Americans regard the right to defend themselves as a fundamental right that should not be tampered with. Many politicians agree or do not dare to adhere to stricter rules for fear of being punished in the elections.

Demonstrations for stricter gun laws are taking place outside the convention center where the NRA meets. The Republican governor of Texas, out of piety with the victims, decided not to speak in person at the congress.
