Wilmington. Upset by his judicial problems, former US President Donald Trump is holding a rally in North Carolina this Saturday, his first major campaign event since the start of his trial in New York.
The Republican billionaire will speak in Wilmington, a town in this state strongly contested with his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, for the presidential elections on November 5.
The man hoping to make a triumphant return to the White House is on trial in New York for covert payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels to allegedly buy her silence about an extramarital affair days before the 2016 election, which she won against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Trump, who denounces a “witch hunt”, has protested several times that the trial does not leave him freedom of maneuver.
“He should be in Pennsylvania and Florida now, and in many other states, in North Carolina, in Georgia, campaigning,” he said indignantly this week.
On Saturday morning, several hours before the meeting, his supporters in Wilmington had already begun to gather, armed with coolers and hats under the scorching North Carolina sun.
For Stephen Prater, a 29-year-old truck driver, it is evident: the process against his candidate is “largely due to the left that is trying to do everything possible to prevent him from being president again.”
Grace Miller, 58, thinks the same. It is a “political” trial, she says.
“So busy”
On Friday, Trump once again attacked the judge of his trial in New York, historic for being the first criminal trial against a former US president.
“This is electoral interference at a level never seen before in the United States,” he said on his Truth Social platform.
“If a president is not granted immunity, any president who leaves office will be immediately impeached by the opposing party,” he claimed.
While no Democratic presidential candidate has won North Carolina since Barack Obama in 2008, Biden wants to believe he has a chance in the state.
Well, although Trump won it twice, in 2016 and 2020, Biden narrowly lost in the last election.
The Democrat tries to take advantage of the legal problems of his rival, cornered in court several days a week, and works the ground.
He was in his native Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, also highly contested and crucial for the November elections.
Although he has long avoided commenting on Trump’s problems, Biden shot him an arrow this week, saying he would be “very busy right now.”
The White House assured that Biden is not following the news of the process, stating that the president “focuses on Americans.”
The trial coincides with Biden’s advance in the polls since he gave his State of the Union address in March. Now the two candidates are neck and neck.
But Trump and his supporters hope to take advantage of the media attention surrounding his criminal trial, counting on the fact that it offers him an exceptional platform to campaign.
