Former US President Donald Trump did not appear Monday before the House of Representatives committee investigating the storming of the Capitol. The commission is now considering how to deal with the fact that he did not appear despite a summons.
The commission says Trump, like many of his allies, is “dodging the commission’s investigation and refusing to do what more than 1,000 witnesses have already done.”
Not surprisingly, Trump did not appear. The former chairman had previously been told that he was due to appear before the committee. According to that subpoena, he also has to hand over documents due to his role in the attack on the US parliament building in 2021.
His lawyers objected on Friday. They want the subpoena declared invalid and unenforceable.
The Commission of Inquiry shows little understanding for this new case. “Trump’s lawyers have not attempted to negotiate any cooperation. And his trial raises many arguments that the courts have repeatedly refuted over the past year.”
Trump has orchestrated a plan to overturn the presidential election and block the transfer of power, the committee said. “He has to answer to the American people.”
Five people, including a police officer, died during or shortly after the riots on January 6, 2021. More than 140 police officers were injured in the attack. Damage to the Capitol amounted to millions of dollars. The rioters targeted former Vice President Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, among others.
