The two will have a debate on Tuesday evening (American time) in the run-up to the presidential election on November 3. Trump wants “Sleepy Joe,” as he invariably calls his 77-year-old challenger, to be tested before or after that debate, because his performances in debates have been, to put it mildly, “uneven.” Only drugs could have caused that difference, the president suggests on Twitter without providing any evidence.
Trump made the same proposal a month ago. He said then that he had noticed that Biden was suddenly doing much better in debates with other Democrats. In 2016, Trump challenged his then rival candidate Hillary Clinton to also undergo a drug test. That proposal was discarded.
Trump has long been making derisive comments about Biden, who also regularly hits back. Three debates are planned between the two presidential candidates. The first is Tuesday in Cleveland, Ohio and the second showdown is on October 15 in Miami, Florida. A week later, the final debate follows in Nashville, Tennessee.
