Trump declares a state of emergency in Louisiana and Mississippi over Hurricane Sally | NOW

US President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on Monday in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, where Hurricane Sally is expected to make landfall on Tuesday (local time). The hurricane quickly increased in strength on Monday, bringing gusts of wind up to 155 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the Sally can become one of the third category. The hurricane also moves relatively slowly over land, which can cause additional damage.

The slow pace at which the hurricane is moving also makes it difficult to predict exactly what time Sally will reach the mainland on Tuesday.

As a precaution, residents of low-lying areas in Louisiana and Mississippi have been called to evacuate. In Alabama, residents of vulnerable areas have also been urged to leave their homes and beaches have been closed as a precaution.

Sally is the second hurricane in less than a month to make landfall in the United States. In late August, Hurricane Laura caused a lot of damage in Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas. The Category 4 hurricane cost at least fourteen people’s life. Hundreds of thousands more people were left without power.
