Trump could be charged with trying to overthrow the election by the end of the month

Former President Donald Trump could face his first indictments as early as this month for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

On Friday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis told the Associated Press that she expects by March 30.

“I think that decision will be made in the first half of the year,” Willis said.

Willis has been investigating Trump’s efforts to intervene in Georgia’s 2020 election for more than 16 months. Trump lost the state by a narrow margin of 0.23 points.

The prosecutor has ramped up her investigations in recent months, interviewing more than four dozen people in the state and reportedly subpoenaing a number of state officials, including Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who recently won the GOP reelection nomination despite Trump’s efforts to replace him for not helping him “find 11,780 votes”.

Earlier this year, Willis received clearance for a special grand jury and has requested additional security from the FBI as part of her investigation, citing the Jan. 6 riot in the Capitol. But she balked at allowing witnesses to testify before the jury.

“I don’t want anyone to say, ‘Oh, she’s doing this because she wants to affect the outcome of this upcoming election,'” said Willis, a Democrat Constitution of the Atlanta Journal about waiting until after the state primary. “The people will decide the outcome of this upcoming election. It will have nothing to do with this prosecutor.”

She also told Atlanta’s WSB-TV2 in February, “Anyone who breaks the law will be prosecuted, regardless of social status. Regardless of economic status, race or gender. We will not treat everyone differently.”

Legal experts believe the Willis investigation is likely to lead to criminal charges against Trump and suggest those charges could be the first of many across the country.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Georgia was the first jurisdiction to charge a former president with a felony. I doubt it will be the last Harvard University tweeted last month.

Trump, on the other hand, continued to criticize the investigation, calling it a “witch hunt” and slamming Willis on the social media platform Truth Social for “going after me instead of the people who rigged and stole” in the 2020 election.
