President Trump is assured of enough Republican votes in the Senate to propose his nominee for the Supreme Court.
A new judge has to be appointed, because judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on Friday. The Democrats believe that no new judge can be appointed in an election year, and certainly not so shortly before the November elections.
Until now, it was not certain whether enough Republicans would agree that a new judge would now be nominated.
Support Romney
Republican Senator Mitt Romney is expected to be one of the skeptics. He has had several clashes with Trump in the past. But today Romney said he just has to follow the law. “If the candidate is presented, I will check if it is suitable,” he said in a statement.
And because of this, there are only two Republicans who are against the election before the election and a majority are in favor of voting on Trump’s candidate.
Announcement Saturday
Trump says he will announce the name on Saturday. Supreme Court judges are nominated by the President of the United States, but must be approved by the Senate. Trump is expected to seize the opportunity to appoint a conservative judge to replace the liberal Ginsburg.
