Trump clashes with judge in New York court after being accused of overstating assets to enrich himself
(AFP, New York, 6th) Former US President Trump appeared in a New York court today to testify in a civil lawsuit that threatens his real estate empire. Trump repeatedly clashed with the judge in court and denounced the trial as a “disgrace.”
The 77-year-old Trump has become the first former U.S. president to testify as a defendant in a court case in more than 100 years. The U.S. presidential election in November 2024 is still a year away, and he, who is troubled by lawsuits, hopes to return to the White House after the election.
During Trump’s appearance in a Manhattan court in New York, he had many heated exchanges with Judge Arthur Engoron and lawyers from the New York State Attorney General’s Office, prompting the judge at one point to ask him to “answer questions directly and not make a speech.”
“This is not a political rally, this is a courthouse,” the New York Supreme Court justice told Trump.
Trump accused Englund of being “hostile” toward him and angrily denounced New York Attorney General Letitia James, who filed the lawsuit against him, as a “political minion.”
“I think this lawsuit is a disgrace,” Trump said, adding: “This is election interference.”
Englund, who was clearly irritated, at one point asked Trump’s lawyer Christopher Kise to “take care of your client.”
Engelon issued a restraining order against Trump after he insulted a court clerk in a social media post, and later fined Trump twice for violating the order, totaling $15,000. Englund extended the gag order to Trump’s lawyers on the 5th of this month.
Trump and his two sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, were charged in New York state with inflating the value of real estate in the family business, the Trump Organization, in order to obtain more favorable bank offers. Loan and Insurance Terms.
Trump appeared today wearing a dark blue suit with an American flag on his lapel. He accused the Democratic Party of “pursuing me from 15 different aspects” and launching a “crazy trial” against me.
He dismissed accusations that the company’s financial statements were false, saying the figures were “very conservative” and did not overstate his assets. Trump also said the statements did not reflect his “brand value.”
Lexia James told reporters that Trump “has consistently misrepresented and inflated the value of his assets” and said he did not take Trump’s personal attacks on her seriously.
Lexia James said: “The numbers don’t lie. I will not be bullied. I will not be harassed. This case will go to trial. Justice will prevail.”
Lexia James said that Trump’s daughter Ivanka (Ivanka Trump) will appear in court to testify on the 8th. She left the family business “Trump Group” in 2017 to become a White House consultant and is not a co-defendant in this case. (Translator: Liu Wenyu/Verification: Lu Yingzi)
