Trump Claims He Could Reach Abortion Agreement “The Whole Country Could Agree to” if Re-Elected

Former President Donald Trump claimed on May 16 that if he were re-elected to the White House, he could reach a deal on abortion that “the whole country could agree to.”

“Now we’re in a position where we can get something the whole country can agree on, and that’s only because I got us out of Roe vs. Wade, where pro-lifers had absolutely nothing to say.” stated Trump told Newsmax TV, without giving details about the aforementioned agreement.

When asked for more details, the former president said he had put pro-life states in a “very powerful bargaining position.”

“Nobody thought it was possible to do what I did with Roe against Wade and now because of what I did, we have a very powerful bargaining position; more powerful, frankly, than the other party,” Trump said.

“But in pro-life stuff, I’ll tell you what I did in Roe vs. Wade, no one else, for 50 years, has tried to do it. I got it. And now we are in a position to make a great deal, and a deal that the people want,” he added.

The Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in June of last year after a 6-3 vote. Judge Samuel Alito, author of the opinion majority of the court, affirmed that “Roe was an egregious mistake from the beginning” and that “it is time to listen to the Constitution and return the abortion issue to the elected representatives of the people.”

Three of the six justices who ruled in favor of the state of Mississippi in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court case that Roe overturned, were Trump appointees: Neil Gorsuch in 2017, Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, and Amy Coney. Barrett in 2020.

“Today’s decision, which is the biggest victory for LIFE in a generation, along with other decisions that have been announced recently, have only been possible because I have delivered on everything I have promised, including the nomination and confirmation of three highly respected constitutionalists and strong in the Supreme Court of the United States”, said Trump in a statement last year, following the overturning of Roe.

Reviews of DeSantis

Trump also continued his criticism of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for recently enacting a law that forbids abortion after six weeks, with exceptions for cases involving circumstances such as rape or incest.

“Now DeSantis, or Ron DeSanturrón, as I call him, came up with the six weeks thing. Other people agree with him. And a lot of people don’t,” Trump said.

In a interview With The Messenger published on May 15, Trump made similar criticisms of the new Florida ban.

“He has to do what he has to do,” Trump said. “If you look at what DeSantis did, a lot of people don’t even know if he knew what he was doing. But he signed on for six weeks, and a lot of people within the pro-life movement think that was too harsh.”

On Tuesday, DeSantis responded to Trump’s criticism, saying the ban has broad support.

“Protecting an unborn child when there is a detectable heartbeat is something that nearly 99% of pro-lifers support,” said the governor of Florida. “As a Florida resident, you know, he didn’t give an answer about, ‘Would you have enacted the heartbeat law that Florida did, which had all the exceptions that people talk about?’

DeSantis is considered Trump’s main challenger for the 2024 Republican nomination. The Florida governor has not officially launched a presidential bid but is expected to make his decision soon.

According to one survey According to National Research Inc., which surveyed 500 likely voters in the New Hampshire Republican primary between May 15 and 17, Trump won 39% of support, leading second-ranked DeSantis by 21 percentage points.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu was third with 17% support, followed by biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy with 6% and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley with 3%.
