US President Donald Trump has named his close friend, Republican lawyer Matthew Whitaker, as a candidate for US ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Details: Whitaker served as acting US attorney general from November 2018 to February 2019 after Trump fired his first attorney general, Jeff Sessions.

The US media notes that Whitaker’s foreign policy views are almost unknown. He was never involved in foreign policy or national security.
Whitaker accused special counsel Jack Smith of using “new legal theories” to charge Trump with crimes to prevent him from running in the 2024 election.
As acting attorney general, Whitaker led special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Trump’s collusion with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election.
At the time, critics feared that Whitaker would obstruct or end Mueller’s investigation. However, he allowed Mueller to continue his work unhindered.
“I have every confidence in Matt’s ability to represent the United States of America with unwavering strength, integrity and loyalty,” Trump said in a statement Wednesday.
“I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to advance PEACE THROUGH STRUGGLE, freedom and prosperity around the world,” he said.
Trump attacked NATO allies over their defense spending. During the election campaign, he threatened that the United States would not come to the aid of alliances that did not spend enough on the military.
The position of NATO representative requires Senate confirmation.
