US president Donald Trump has been linked to the overthrow of statues in the protests against racism and police violence in the United States terrorism brought. Trump threatened protesters who tried to place statues of historical figures in the USA to bring down on Thursday night on Fox News with serious consequences. “We’re going to go harder and harder every night,” Trump said. “And at some point there will be retribution.” These demonstrators are vandals and instigators – but in truth they are “in a way terrorists”.

The protests against racism and police violence after the death of the African American George Floyd have sparked a debate in the United States about the country’s culture of remembrance. In various parts of the country, demonstrators were quick to topple and toppled statues depicting historical figures associated with racism. In Washington, demonstrators had failed Monday night to topple a statue of President Andrew Jackson.
Trump said Thursday that he stopped the fall of the Jackson statue. His government has since mobilized the National Guard to protect monuments in the capital, Washington. The approximately 400 activated members have so far been on standby and would support the US park police to prevent “any defacement or destruction”, the National Guard spokesman in Washington, Craig Clapper, said on Wednesday. The National Guard is part of the US Army Reserve.
Trump has promised to issue an order later this week to better protect monuments and statues. “I think a lot of the people who tear down statues have no idea what the statue is,” he said on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the US president threatened people who toppled statues with up to ten years in prison.
