Jakarta

The President-elect of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, Dr. Mehmet Oz was selected as administrator of the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The service center is an organization that oversees the health insurance of US citizens.

“I have known Dr. Oz for many years, and I am confident that he will fight to ensure that every person in America receives the best possible health care, so that the our country to be great and healthy again!” Trump said in a statement CNNWednesday (20/11/2024).

“Dr. Oz is a leader in providing incentives for disease prevention, so that we get the best results in the world for every dollar we spend on Health Care in our great country,” he said.

Trump said he plans to cut government spending that causes waste. He believes that Dr. Oz will accomplish his mission.

“He (Dr. Oz) will reduce waste and fraud in our nation’s most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our nation’s health budget, and a quarter of our entire national budget,” Trump said.

Dr. Oz Profile

Oz is known to be a cardiothoracic surgeon and television personality. He ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 2022 in Pennsylvania with Trump’s support.

He lost to Democrat and now Senator, John Fetterman.

In 2018, Trump appointed Oz to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, and renominated him to the post in 2020.

Oz became famous as a frequent guest on Oprah Winfrey. He finally launched his own daytime TV talk show in 2009. Through ‘The Dr Oz Show’ which won multiple daytime Emmy awards and reached millions of viewers, Oz became one of these shows. the most famous doctor in the country.

But his views on COVID-19 sparked controversy. Early in the pandemic, for example, Oz touted the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a way to treat the coronavirus – despite the lack of strong scientific evidence that it was an effective treatment. Many of Oz’s ideas were praised by Republicans at the time.

Oz’s selection follows a series of unusual choices by Trump for top administration positions, including Robert F Kennedy Jr as Secretary of Health and Human Services. If both are confirmed, Kennedy will become the leader of Oz. For CMS administrator in his first term, Trump chose Seema Verma, who has a long history in health policy and consulting as an expert in Medicaid.
