Trump announces new Middle East peace deal, this time between Israel and Bahrain – The Economic Journal

President Donald Trump announced yet another peace deal in the Middle East, this time between Israel and Bahrain. The two states agreed to reestablish normal diplomatic relations, as can be seen in a joint statement between the three countries involved.

“This is a historic agreement to deepen peace in the Middle East,” reads the statement. The compromise comes after talks between Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, whom the parties involved thank for the reception of the June 25, 2019 “Peace for Prosperity” conference.

The statement also recalls the role of the United Arab Emirates and its leader, Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, for the leadership shown in taking the first step among the Arab countries in the region and moving towards normalizing relations with Israel.

President Trump has dubbed the agreement “historic”. “It is unimaginable that this can happen and so quickly,” the American president congratulated reporters at the White House. Jared Kushner, son-in-law of the president and adviser to the Trump administration for the region, also believes in a “new start for the Middle East”, praising the alliances forged by the USA and its president.

On the other hand, several Palestinian leaders and voices have already condemned the agreement, speaking of a “stab in the back” of the cause of the Palestinian people. A source close to Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, reportedly told Al Jazeera that “peace in the Middle East will not come without a solution to the Palestinian issue”.
