The former president of USA Donald Trump (2017-2021) took a big step towards the Republican nomination this Tuesday and managed to come out even stronger in the primaries held on ‘Super Tuesday’, with victories in key states such as Texaswhich bring him closer to the figure necessary to confirm his candidacy.
With 57% of the votes counted, the Republican would achieve 76.9% of the votes compared to 18.1% of Nikki Haleyhis only rival, and with this he would win the majority of the 161 delegates distributed (proportionally, in this case) by this state, the one with the greatest representation along with California (169), whose polls still remain open.
The former US president also won in Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee y Maineas well as in Virginia y North Carolinasome of the states that held primaries tonight on the relevant date of ‘Super Tuesday’.
According to an estimated count by ABC News, with several elections still pending, Trump now has 739 delegates of the 1,215 necessary for the mathematical nomination.
Victory seems clear in the majority of states for which data is known at this time, except in Vermontin which the margin is very close and her only rival, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, could still win.
This Tuesday, 865 Republican delegates were distributed, 35.6% of the total. Until now, Trump had 273 compared to Haley’s 43 and had won in all the primaries and caucuses that had been held, in states such as Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina.
His eternal hated city, Washington DCwhich he always describes as a “swamp”, was the only one he failed to win and in which Haley emerged victorious.
Thus, the most likely thing is that his hypothetical mathematical nomination will happen on the 12th, where 161 delegates will be distributed in primaries from states such as Georgia (59) o Washington (43).
But it will certainly achieve it – barring a major surprise – on the 19th, where 350 delegates will be awarded in states like Florida (125) y Ohio (79).
Trump also achieved victory this Tuesday in Colorado with 63% of the votes compared to Haley’s 34% (with 93% counted), after just yesterday the Supreme Court determined that the former president could run in the primaries.
He thereby rejected the ruling of a court in this state that determined his expulsion – clinging to an article of the Constitution – for his participation in the assault on the Capitol, when a horde of Trumpists attacked Congress to try to stop the ratification of the victory of Joe Biden.
In total, Republican primaries were held today in 15 states of the 50 that make up the country, including California y Texasthe largest in the United States.
Democratic and Republican voters also went to the polls. Alabama, Arkansas, alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont y Virginia.
Trump is inching closer to the Republican nomination, which will be officially confirmed at the Republican National Convention taking place July 15-18 in Milwaukee (Wisconsin).
And all this despite all the trials against him. One in Georgia for trying to alter the 2020 presidential elections; another in Washington DC for his participation in the assault on the Capitol; another in New York for alleged irregular payments to the porn actress Stormy Daniels; and another in Florida for having illegally stored classified material in his mansion in Mar-a-Lago after leaving power.
In addition, the Supreme Court is pending to hold a hearing the week of April 22 on whether Trump can be tried for electoral interference in the 2020 presidential elections or if he has immunity. EFE (I)
