The Republican candidate for the US presidency, Donald Trumpaccused immigrants arriving in the United States of eating the dogs and cats of citizens living in border cities on Tuesday, in front of a stunned Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival in the November 5 elections.
“Many cities don’t want to talk about it because they are ashamed. In Springfield, they are eating the dogs of the people who came here, they are eating the cats, they are eating the pets of the people who live there and this is what is happening in our country and it is a disgrace.”the former president noted, echoing racist rhetoric.
Trump and his vice presidential running mate, JD Vance, have spread false information about Haitian migrants “causing chaos” in an Ohio town and kidnapping pets to eat.
Local authorities have already come out to deny these rumours, which have spread like wildfire on social media, especially on X, where Elon Musk himself, the billionaire owner of the platform, has helped spread this hoax.
ABC News anchor David Muir was quick to correct the former president: “I just want to clarify this. You mention Springfield, Ohio, and ABC News reached out to the city manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being hurt, injured, or mistreated by individuals within the immigrant community.”he said. EFE
