Trudie has been stalked by her father Gerben for eight years. “I’m tired of fighting,” she tells Thijs Zeeman in tears. “I don’t see any other way to protect my child from him. I want her to grow up carefree without having to look over her shoulder like I have to. I don’t want that for her.”
“He’s very obsessed with us. With me.” She tells what Gerben does. “Chasing in the car, when I’m on my bike and at my child’s daycare. My father is a violent man. Unpredictable. A narcissist.” She also receives e-mails, whether or not sent by fake accounts.
Trudie’s brother and mother are also stalked by the father. Gerben is violent in Trudie’s youth. After her father loses control for the umpteenth time, Trudie leaves the parental home with her mother and brother. “I think that’s when it all started.”
Gerben has already been tried for stalking Trudie’s mother. Although he has been sentenced to a restraining order in 2021, he does not stop watching his former family members on a daily basis.
And that’s not the only conviction. Trudie and her husband see one day that Gerben is stalking his car again in front of their house. Trudie’s husband takes the plunge and approaches him. “Then he hit my husband.” Gerben is convicted of the collision, but Trudie’s father continues to stalk after that.
At one point Trudie receives e-mails that her father is seriously ill and later even an obituary. For a week she thinks her father is dead, until she sees him alive. “I felt fooled.”

When she has picked up her child from daycare, she sees her father’s car that he is in. She shows how scared she is. Crying, she says: “I’m shaking all over.” It is clearly visible what this stalking does to Trudie.
Time for confrontation. Thijs approaches Gerben, but he denies. “I do not know what you’re talking about.” Trudie watches the confrontation in tears. “I hope he leaves us alone. That we can move on. That things settle in. And that maybe one day he will seek help, because I really think he needs help.”
After the confrontation, it is fortunately quiet: Trudie, her mother and brother have not heard from Gerben.
Sailor Confronts: Stalkers can be seen every Tuesday at 8.30 p.m. on RTL 5.
