According to the state broadcaster CBC The very rare exemption provision gives the government the opportunity to introduce “temporary measures that are not appropriate under normal circumstances”.
The background is the extensive protests against the authorities’ coronary restrictions and vaccine requirements, where truck drivers have led the way and blocked the streets in the capital Ottawa, as well as several border crossings to the USA.
The protesters refuse to move until all the country’s coronary restrictions and vaccine orders have been lifted. They even call the protest a “column of freedom”.
Dissatisfied residents
“The federal government has implemented the exemption provision to help local authorities deal with the blockades and occupations,” Trudeau said.
In Ottawa, the blockade has led to outrage among residents. It is also aimed at the police and the government who have not managed to remove the protesters.
The crisis has also hit the local business community hard. Many of them have closed their doors, and very few stop by where it is open, as people have been encouraged to stay away from the city center.
The Prime Minister added that the military will not be involved at this time, but that the authorities will have increased power to arrest protesters and seize their trucks, as well as ban funding for the demonstrations.
Arrested with weapons
On Monday, it became known that the police had arrested eleven people with large quantities of firearms that blocked one of the border crossings to the USA.
– The group was said to be willing to use force against the police if an attempt was made to clear the blockade, it was said in a statement from the federal police RCMP.
This weekend, police managed to lift the blockade of the important Ambassador Bridge, which connects the Canadian city of Windsor with Detroit in Michigan in the USA. 25 percent of exports and imports between the two countries cross the bridge.
