The move was confirmed by Bill Blair, Canada’s minister of public security, who justified the closure in the face of the growing spread of Covid-19 in both countries. The border between the United States and Canada will remain closed until November 21, according to “Reuters”.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would love to “have the border open … but we cannot do that unless we are comfortable with the safety of Canadians”, in an interview with the radio “AM 900 CHML Hamilton” this Monday- on the 19th of October.
“At the moment, the situation in the United States remains a matter of concern,” added Trudeau.
Last month, on the day the border extension was confirmed, United States President Donald Trump said the border would open “soon” because Canada wanted restrictions to be lifted. But the Canadian government has made it clear that it does not want the restrictions to be removed until Covid-19 is under control in both countries.
