Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will inform provincial prime ministers that he intends to take special measures to give the federal government extraordinary powers to deal with protests that have blocked some US border crossings and paralyzed parts of the Canadian capital Ottawa.
Trudeau plans to trigger the Emergency Act, which allows the federal government to allow special temporary security measures in Canada’s national emergency.
These provisions have been used only once in peacetime – by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin Trudeau’s father, during the so-called The October Crisis of 1970
They were triggered twice during the two world wars, but were then part of the Military Measures Act. The province of Ontario said it would remove coronavirus-related restrictions on the capacity of restaurants, bars, casinos and other facilities this week. March 1 intends to abolish the requirements for certification of vaccination.
