Trudeau confirms Canada’s intention to seek justice for victims of Ukrainian plane shot down by Iran in 2020

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday affirmed his government’s desire to bring justice to the victims of the Ukrainian plane crash of the Boeing shot down by the Iranian military, during a ceremony in Toronto on the third anniversary of the crash.

“We remain committed to doing more to make sure this brutal and murderous regime is held fully accountable,” Trudeau told an audience of family members of BS 752 victims.

“This tragedy happened because of the Iranian regime’s total disregard for people’s lives,” he added.

Rallies to commemorate the tragedy were organized on Sunday in several Canadian cities.

On January 8, 2020, the Iranian military shot down a plane en route from Tehran to Kiev, killing 176 people, including 55 Canadians and 30 permanent residents.

Just three days later the Iranian authorities admitted that they had shot down the plane “by mistake”.

Trudeau recalled that Canada, along with Ukraine, Sweden and Great Britain, announced in late December that they had notified Iran that it needed to be held accountable.

He explained that if Iran does not comply with this mechanism in the next six months, the four countries will take the case to the International Court of Justice to force Iran to compensate the families of the victims.
