Trudeau announces tough new sanctions against Russia

The Ukrainian president spoke with the Prime Minister of Canada and called for tough sanctions against Russia.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the immediate imposition of tough sanctions against Russia. Zelensky announced this on Thursday evening, February 24, on Twitter.

“Telephone conversation with Justin Trudeau. Today there is a full-scale war on the territory of all of Ukraine! We demand to immediately introduce additional tough sanctions against the Russian Federation. Now more than ever we need concrete support! I count on Canada’s leadership in this process!” Zelensky wrote.

Later edition National Post reported that Trudeau announced tough Canadian sanctions against Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

They will target 58 individuals and entities linked to Russia, including members of the Russian elite and their families, Wagner’s private military company, and major Russian banks.

The sanctions will also affect members of the Russian Security Council, including key ministers of the Russian government, including the ministers of defense, finance and justice.

Canada will also revoke existing export permits for Russia and will not issue new ones.

Trudeau said the federal government will prioritize immigration applications for Ukrainians wishing to move to Canada. He added that the government is launching a special telephone line for everyone who has urgent questions about emigration from Ukraine.
