The Canadian prime minister does not think it is a good idea to make “such a profound change in a system that is among the best and most stable in the world”.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected the renewed debate on the role of the British monarchy in his country. For him, the question of whether the British monarch should remain in charge of Canada “is not a priority,” Trudeau told Radio Canada on Sunday, a day before the Queen’s state funeral. He doesn’t even want to discuss it.
He doesn’t think such “profound change in a system that is one of the best and most stable in the world is a good idea,” said the Canadian head of government.
Discussion of the continued existence of the monarchy
Along with Australia and New Zealand, Canada is one of 14 former British colonies where the British monarch is still the head of state. However, the Queen’s death on September 8 reignited the debate over the role of the British monarchy in the North American country, independent since 1867.
According to an Ipsos poll for Global News, 58% of Canadians support a referendum on the issue. This is five percentage points higher than a year ago. Only 44 percent have a positive image of King Charles III, the queen’s successor.
