New Delhi – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated that India has violated the Vienna Convention by sending back Canadian diplomats. If big countries violate international law, it will have a dangerous effect on the whole world. Trudeau said that India is handling things unilaterally and is not ready to listen to its side.
“As soon as we got a clear indication that Indian agents were behind the killing of the Canadian citizen, we contacted the Indian government. He also demanded an investigation into the incident. Allies, including the US, were requested to intervene effectively in the matter. This is a matter of international law and sovereignty,” Trudeau said in relation to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
If one country does not provide adequate protection to the diplomats of other countries, it can cause a rift in international relations. Attempts are being made to resolve issues through constructive engagement with India. It will continue. We do not want to prolong the current conflict. Trudeau also stated that Canada’s position is to always uphold the rule of law.
Earlier, India had rejected the allegation that Indian agents were behind the killing of Nijjar in Canada. India also accused Canada of providing a safe haven for terrorists. Subsequently, visa processing was suspended and more than forty diplomatic representatives were sent back, accused of meddling in internal affairs. Visa procedures have been partially restored, but the diplomatic crisis is yet to be resolved.
