Truckers Demonstrate Outside Washington for Second Day

New York.- A convoy of truckers and other supporters circled the capital on the Beltway for a second day on Monday, protesting Covid-19 mandates and hoping to attract the attention of lawmakers.

Brian Brase, the organizer of the convoy, told participants gathered at a gazebo in Hagerstown, Md., that the convoy would avoid entering Washington, DC again.

He stressed that the protesters do not want to provoke a violent event like the attack on Capitol Hill that occurred on January 6, saying that would discredit the group.

He added that the group did not intend to cause a traffic jam.

“We don’t want to shut down the Beltway, we just want to be heard,” Brase said.

A similar rally was held on Sunday and had minimal impact on traffic.

The convoy — which consisted of several dozen trailers, along with minivans, motorcycles, trucks and hatchbacks — circled Interstate 495, known as the Capital Beltway, twice before returning to the pavilion at Hagerstown Speedway, where the group has been for several days.

The main group behind the caravan, called El Convoy de la Gente, called for an end to the national emergency that was first declared by President Donald Trump in March 2020 and recently extended by President Biden.

Protesters also said they want to meet with lawmakers and hold congressional hearings on the origin of the pandemic and end government-issued vaccine and mask mandates.
