Truck Drivers’ Protests at Polish-Ukrainian Border Spark Traffic Chaos and EU Response

The truck drivers have blocked various border crossings since early November in protest against what they say is unfair competition from Ukrainian truck drivers.

The Ukrainian border guard said on Christmas Eve on Telegram that the protest at the Medyka-Shehyni crossing ended at 9:30 a.m. local time, and that traffic then resumed as normal.

The EU has relaxed an entry permit requirement for Ukrainian truck drivers as a gesture of solidarity following the Russian invasion. Polish drivers believe this is undermining their income, and their protests along the border have sparked long queues.

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj met the new Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski to discuss the blockades.
