A 23-year-old woman died and three people were injured after a truck hit a car in the emergency lane of the Trakia highway.
This was announced at an extraordinary briefing by the head of the Road Police – Sliven Chief Inspector Iliyan Nikolov, quoted by BTA. The truck driver tested positive for methamphetamine.
The accident was reported on September 27 at around 10:50 a.m. at km 236 on the Trakia highway in the direction of Sofia.
The truck with Sofia registration hit a broken-down car with Burgas registration, stopped in the emergency lane due to a flat tire.
Two women who were outside the vehicle were seriously injured, and a third had minor injuries. They were taken to the regional hospital in Stara Zagora.
The district prosecutor’s office in Sliven prosecuted the driver of the truck for violating traffic rules after using a narcotic substance. The result of the alcohol test was negative.
The detainee explained that he did not see the car, but the prosecutor’s office clarified that the car had its emergency lights on.
The driver of the truck was detained for 72 hours, pending a request for a permanent measure. So far, he has been ticketed 21 times for various violations such as speed limits, car lights not on, failed technical inspection. The truck is owned by a commercial company.
The punishment that the law provides for such a crime is five to 15 years of “imprisonment” as well as deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle.
