Troubled day full of farmers’ protest: ME uses tear gas, 200 fines handed out

The situation in Heerenveen got out of hand: the Mobile Unit was deployed to lift the blockade at a distribution center, but was pelted ‘with various objects’. In the end, tear gas had to be used. Three people were arrested.

This also happened in Sneek, where the ME had to lift the blockade. These are images of the blockade in Sneek:

A total of seven people have been arrested in Friesland, the police report. Around 200 fines have been handed out throughout the country, said police commander Willem Woelders on talk show Op1.

Emergency ordinance in Zwolle

The police have made six arrests in Zwolle after the end of a protest blockade at an Albert Heijn distribution center. The mobile unit was deployed after the municipality imposed an emergency ordinance. The six people have been arrested for public assault.

The approximately 200 people at the distribution center on Galvaniweg had been asked several times to leave. Because according to the police they did not respond, the riot police intervened. The activists threw bottles at officers and a police shovel was also destroyed.

The police do not rule out the possibility that more people will be arrested on the basis of images, among other things. At around 12:45 a.m., a reporter from De Stentor reported that it was quiet again:

Across the country, about 15 supermarket distribution centers and several highways were blocked, according to police. The police chief said there were no major problems. “There have been no major disturbances of the peace, but it did become restless in some places.”

Blockades on highways

On the highways there were blockades on or near the A1, the A73, the A67, the A6 and the A28. This caused traffic delays and in some cases the road was closed completely. Farmers also came with tractors to the Media Park in Hilversum and a waste processing company in Hengelo.

Farmers also caused traffic nuisance on provincial roads. Twenty people were fined on the N640 near Etten-Leur for driving an agricultural vehicle against the rules. In Harlingen, IJmuiden, Den Helder and Lauwersoog, fishermen blocked the harbor for some time.
