Many people are looking forward to the release of Aquaman 2. It is mainly the fuss that draws people to the cinema. The atmosphere on the set would have been anything but pleasant and leading actress Amber Heard would even have almost been fired.
The first Aquamanfilm, which was released in 2018, was a huge success. DC’s superhero film grossed more than 1 billion euros worldwide, making it the production company’s most successful film ever. Lead actor Jason Momoa, who plays superhero Aquaman, has become an indispensable part of Hollywood since then.
It didn’t take long before there was a sequel Aquaman announced. It is also directed by James Wan, and Momoa and Amber also return. The film was intended to be released in cinemas around Christmas 2022. That didn’t happen in the end.
Lead actress Heard had completely different things on her mind during the recordings. She became embroiled in a lawsuit against her ex Johnny Depp, whom she accused of assault. Depp fans rallied en masse behind their idol and turned against Heard. They even started a petition to have Heard out Aquaman 2 to have it cut.
It didn’t get that far, but the recordings did not go smoothly. In the summer of 2022 it was announced that the release date of Aquaman 2 was postponed for a year. No reason was given, which of course caused a lot of gossip.

The film will now be released in theaters at the end of December. And just under a month ago the first trailer was released. That same day, documents from the now concluded case between Depp and Heard were also leaked. These were shared by, among others Variety. It can be read that Heard talked about the “nasty and hostile” atmosphere that, according to the actress, on the set of Aquaman 2 hing.
Zo zour co-star Momoa dressed up as Depp. “Including all his rings,” says a source on the film set. According to Heard, Momoa was drunk when he did that. The actor is also said to have asked if his co-star could be fired. This is denied by film production company DC. “Jason has always conducted himself professionally.” Yet the love between the protagonists seems to have cooled, because Momoa no longer follows Heard on Instagram.
Director James Wan is also said to have misbehaved with Heard. “He raised his voice at me and blamed me for the film getting bad publicity. He acted as if it was all my fault,” Heard wrote in the leaked documents. This is also denied by DC.
Yet it was close to Heard being fired, various sources report Variety. It would have nothing to do with the case against Depp. But with the lack of chemistry between Heard and Momoa. Director James Wan was not satisfied with this after the first film and wanted to replace Heard with another actress in the sequel.

Heard continued to appear in the film, but the actress is not happy. Quite a few of her scenes were cut, so she says she no longer has a major role. Sources confirm that significant cuts have indeed been made in the meantime Aquaman 2. In between, the film was shown a few times to a test audience, who responded only lukewarmly. It also explains why the film’s release was pushed back a year. Reshoots took place in May of this year, until Hollywood stopped work due to the major strike.
Strangely enough, the Hollywood strike may be a relief for the Aquaman-makers. If the strike continues in December, the actors and director do not have to promote the film. And so they don’t have to answer questions about possible arguments and cut scenes. That is not good for marketing, but it is good for the stress level of the makers.
