The Leipzig Kings will “very likely” have to stop playing in the European League of Football (ELF). The owners announced this on Tuesday. The reason is a “continuous, economically tense situation” of the franchise. According to their own statements, those responsible are working “at high pressure” on a solution in order to be able to end the current season.
The Kings have been an EFL member since early 2021. Whether the home game against Berlin Thunder can be played on Sunday in the Bruno-Plache-Stadion is open, so far only four of 14 matchdays have been completed.
The league reacted aggressively. “The European League of Football is working in dialogue with those responsible in Leipzig and alongside partners to ensure game operations are not just short-term,” it said in a statement: “We continue to believe in Leipzig as a location.” The average attendance of the Kings in the past seasons was 2072 (2021) and 2600 (2022).
