The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) reported that Tropical Storm John has been reclassified to “Hurricane John,” with sustained winds of 136 kilometers per hour (km/h), near the coast of southern Mexico, and continues to move slowly toward the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

In addition, in the Caribbean, potential tropical cyclone nine continues to be monitored near the Grand Cayman Islands, moving northwest towards the Yucatan Peninsula, which could be reclassified as a tropical depression during the course of today.

MARN reported rain and thunderstorms on Monday in areas of Santa Ana, Chalchuapa, Coatepeque, Juayúa, El Congo, Chaparrastique volcano, San Miguel, Perquín, Osicala, Meanguera, Cacaopera, Nueva Esparta and Lislique.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected for the remainder of Monday, with an increase in rainfall expected on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 September, with seasonal characteristics, due to the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the influence of potential tropical cyclone nine.
