Tropical Storm “Lan” Causes Devastation in Japan, Death Toll Rises to 50

TOKYO, August 16, WAM/ The death toll from Tropical Storm “Lan”, which struck western and central Japan with strong winds and heavy rains, has risen to about 50.
Japanese broadcaster NHK said yesterday that the Meteorological Agency issued the highest level of emergency warning of heavy rain in Tottori Prefecture, noting that the authorities urged citizens to be careful of mudslides and floods.
And Japan Airlines announced the cancellation of most of its flights today to and from airports in western and central Japan, pointing out that the total number of canceled domestic flights may exceed 800 flights.
The storm is expected to move slowly towards the north, with winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour.
