Tropical storm Julia kills at least 19 people in Central America

A tropical storm killed at least 19 people in Central America. There have been casualties in El Salvador and Honduras, among others.

Authorities in El Salvador reported at least nine deaths, including five military. In the country 830 people were evacuated due to the storm, which was given the name of Julia.

Five deaths have been reported in Honduras so far, including a mother with a child. They were on a boat that capsized in the storm. In the country, 9,200 people sought protection elsewhere.

Five others were killed in Guatemala when the house they took refuge in was buried under faded earth.

Last weekend Julia landed on the east coast of Nicaragua. One million people were left without electricity. Some 13,000 families were also evacuated.

According to the US National Hurricane Center in Miami, the tropical storm will continue along the coasts of El Salvador and Guatemala. Schools in both countries are closed due to bad weather.

Although Julia has now weakened, the danger has not yet passed. The storm is accompanied by heavy rains, landslides and floods.

In recent weeks, Hurricane Ian has devastated western Cuba and the southeastern United States. At least a hundred people were killed.
